In most cases, the means to the road trip are to save a romantic relationship. Two of the most famous comedic road trip stories is Peter Farrelly's Dumb and Dumber and Alexander Payne's Sideway's. Both of these movies are similar in the sense that they both capture the struggle and fight to pursue a relationship that only exists to one of the parties, in these two cases, the men. Other well known road trip movies are: Due Date, Easy Ryder, Road Trip, Tommy Boy, The Blues Brothers, etc.

Dumb and Dumber is essentially the story about a two men who are average Joes. They were dead end jobs and really have nothing in life going for them except for their ant farm and doggie wash business 'Mutts Cutts'. One day when Lloyd is working as a limo driver he meets the love of his life, Mary Swanson. Shortly after dropping her off at the airport he realizes that she had left her luggage. By the time he is able to get it back to her, she is already gone. He then convinces his best friend with whom he lives with, Harry to drive with him cross country to Aspen in order to retrieve the luggage back to her while at the same time winning her over romantically. The movie is filled with dream sequences and romantic heartache, little does Lloyd realize, it is all a figment of his imagination because she is married and does not see Lloyd in a romantic light even the slightest bit. In the most famous scene of the movie, Lloyd asks Mary if there is any chance of the two of them ever being together and she's says one in a million. Lloyd then excitedly speaks, 'So you're sayin there's a chance!'

Following the same structure pattern as Dumb and Dumber, Sideways is essentially the story about two friends on a road trip as well. However in a more in depth analysis, it is hardly the story of a roadtrip as it is the story of a man finding his own self worth. Miles is a recently divorced and depressed middle aged man who wants nothing more in life than to get his book published and regain the live if his ex wife. Although sad and lonely, he decides to take his best friend from college Jack on a bachelor trip to upstate California where wine is the main source of attraction. Throughout this trip Jack continuously gets into adverse situations that Miles has no choice but to help out it. However, while longing for his estranged ex wife, he meets a new love Maya. Maya is different than any girl he has ever met and he feels close to her even though only knowing her for a short time. Instances of all human emotion are shown throughout this film such as anger, sadness, joy, nervousness, and lust.

There are many instances of selflessness and strong connection in this movie that both of these characters display one being the scene where Miles and Maya are discussing their favorite wines and why they are their favorite wines. ''Pinot needs constant care and attention… only the most patient and nurturing growers can do it… tap into Pinot's most fragile, delicate qualities… only when someone has taken the time to truly understand its potential… coaxed into its fullest expression… the most haunting and brilliant and subtle and thrilling and ancient.' Here he is describing not just his favorite type of wine grape, but he is describing himself and conveying to her that he, like the pinot is complex and if treated right full of great promise.
